song transcription needed » answer
by hugin77 (UN), 2017-07-20, 19:07  Spam?
Hi.  I would like to ask if someone could help me to transcript the lyrics of a song I found and I liked.
I tried to ask on another forum but it seems that icelandic is not a popular language to learn or to speak abroad, so noone ever answered me.  So I'll try my luck here.
Could a native icelander or someone who knows icelandic well enough help me to transcript this song's lyrics:
----->ðanmenn   or
I wish only the icelandic transcription.  No translation needed.
Thank you in advance

Hi all,

Just needed some clarification on the translation of a quote I intend to get tattooed. I do not speak Icelandic but want the quote in that language. I have used google translate however I am not sure if it is 100% correct. The quote is "All life is precious". Google gave me "allt líf er dýrmætt".

Thanks in advance
Information about a change in the guidelines regarding delete votes » answer
by Paul (AT), 2016-06-27, 17:53  Spam?
The basic rule in GL 3 is "Always confirm the first correct posting!". So far, when there was no completely correct posting, and someone voted for a deletion, this delete vote was the first correct posting, so it had to be confirmed. However, most of the contributors understood this differently or didn't want to comply with it, for reasons I understand. In the last months this rule was challenged several times, which caused a lot of discussions. In the end I came to the conclusion that the vast majority of the community wants less strict delete rules. After discussing some text suggestions (forum: #846903), the following rule was accepted and is now effective:

+Always confirm the first correct posting! [...]
A [del] vote is considered a correct posting if no previous posting (input, vote or comment) contained...

Need help translating part of the Hávamál » answer
by FKN91 (UN), 2015-04-24, 15:08  Spam?
Hi everyone.

I'd like some help in translating stanza 76 and 77 from the Hávamál.
I know that there are several official English translations out there, but I'd love to see how a native Icelandic speaker would translate it. I know the texts are old, but I've heard that Icelandic people have no problem translating it, as the language have virtually not changed.

The texts are as following:
Deyr fé,
deyja frændr,
deyr sjalfr it sama,
en orðstírr
deyr aldregi,
hveim er sér góðan getr.

Deyr fé,
deyja frændr,
deyr sjalfr it sama,
ek veit einn,
at aldrei deyr:
dómr um dauðan hvern.

All inputs are appreciated! Thanks
inntökum » answer
by Galdra, 2014-12-24, 02:38  Spam?  120.148.244...
The phrase "við inntökum" appears within a sentence which gives instructions to performing magic. Some benefit is intended and the only clue to what that benefit is "við inntökum".
One unverified translation is "for colic". The dictionary translation of "intake" does not fit.  The text appears in a manuscript that is presumed to have been written around 1800 ca.

"Við inntöku" means "By consumption" or "When consumed"

Hello i've been going crazy over the translation of this song if anyone could offer me help with the translation of the lyrics of the song i would be forever grateful

This is quite a big passage to translate » answer
by Kirkjuvar (NO/GB), Last modified: 2014-02-15, 23:37  Spam?
I need this translated for my rugby teams version of the haka.

"Lo there, do we see our fathers,
Lo there, do we see our mothers, our sisters and brothers,
Lo there, do we see the line of our people, back to the beginning,
Lo, they do call to us, they bid us to take our place among them,
In the halls of Valhalla where the brave may live forever.

Through the north sea we have come,
To claim out rightful land.
To save our souls, by destroying the enemy.
The Gods have spoken,
The Gods have spoken,
For our ancestors in Valhalla we battle.
Live or die today, we do so in honour.

Help with poem translation » answer
by barefootfiona (DE/GB), 2013-02-03, 15:00  Spam?
Hi everyone,

The first time I was in Iceland, I picked up this little poetry book (Hundrað beztu ljóð á íslenzka tungu - no publish date given as the cover page is torn out, but I would guess 60s or earlier). I've been trying to translate one of the poems (Svanasöngur á heiði by Steingrímur Thorsteinsson).

However, the combination of the poem dating back to the 19th century, and the orthography also being somewhat antiquated has made it very hard for me to render it both accurately and poetically, so while I've used poetic license in some parts, in other parts I've had to pretty much guess at the meaning of words! Any help would be appreciated:

I've only included one sentence here as per the forum rules, but there are two further stanzas and I would love it if someone could proof-read them too.

Making a single compound word for the phrase "the Old Language". » answer
anonymous, 2012-02-08, 11:02  Spam?  174.252.135....
I need to make a single compound word in the Icelandic tongue, that means "the Old Language".  One word.  It needs to sound appropriate to the Icelandic tongue and not be completely uncomfortable to say.  I once had to find a compound for Fire Snake and found Eldslanga was a superb solution.
by MrHorse (IS), 2012-03-31, 16:17  Spam?
The word for "the old language" is "fornmál". It means archaic language and is used in referral to old Norse.
Translation of a short and extremely beautiful song » answer
by FlettaQuestion, 2011-12-19, 05:29  Spam?  24.10.241...
Hi all -- if anyone could translate this song into English for me I'd really really appreciate it. It's entirely exquisite (listen if you'd like), absolutely my favorite song, and I really can't say how much it would mean to me to know the lyrics of that cutting and sliding and building melody. It's "Flétta" by Antony and the Johnsons, Bjork singing along.

skafa með skrúfu
ég kem Þegar hann
ég fletti rólega bakvið lendarnar hvernig
ég skafa öldurnar eins og sund fram á við
leyfðu mér að fletta ofan af mér
allt sem mig langar í er ad mýkjast öll að innan endalaust
loksins finn ég árangur dettur af Þessi farangur
hrynur af lag eftir lag og ég storma upp

Thank you so so so much in advance!
